The Campanile was built to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the landing of the 1820 British Settlers. The 54 meter high building with its 204 steps were constructed on what used to be the landing beach, today standing between the Port Elizabeth harbour and the Settlers Freeway. Some effort has been made to try and … Continue reading Crane your neck

Harbour and Campanile
Looking across the Port Elizabeth Harbour from the harbour wall to the city centre with the Campanile just to the left of the middle of the picture. This is a view of the Campanile that not a lot of people have seen. The Hill Presbyterian Church can just be seen on the left edge of … Continue reading Harbour and Campanile
The Campanile commemoration inscription

Campanile and harbour
Looking towards the Port Elizabeth harbour from the top a building in the city centre the Campanile is visible in the foreground. The little half moon window just above the clock is the viewing deck which is reached by climbing the tower's 204 steps. Donkin Reserve from the Campanile
Looking towards the Donkin Reserve from the viewing deck at the top of the Campanile one can clearly see how big the South African flag flying up there is. The Donkin Lighthouse and Pyramid can be seen on the left with the King Edward Hotel and the Grey Institute next to it.
Campanile for Skywatch

Campanile view north
Looking north out from the Campanile observation area the view is basically taken up by the city centre and Settlers Freeway. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is visible on the right in the background while you can just see the big South African flag on the Donkin Reserve on the left.
Campanile view south
The viewing area of the Campanile has a window on each wall of the room giving you a view all around it. Looking south the Port Elizabeth Harbour and Settlers Freeway is in the foreground with the beachfront in the back. The big warehouse in the middle of the photo is a cold storage facility.
204 steps
I climbed to the top of the Campanile with a reporter from the local newspaper the other day. Problem is that before you get to the top you have to climb 204 steps to get there. The view really does make up for the effort though. Here are 2 of 204 steps... Don't look up, … Continue reading 204 steps
