During the hot dry summer the Karoo veld can be somewhat of a bleak affair, but during the winter it's a different matter. Aloes bloom in all their fiery glory decorating the landscape like Christmas lights. Aloes, like proteas, are often found in the most unlikely and inhospitable places, growing in hot temperature and low rainfall … Continue reading Icons of the Karoo – Roadside Aloes

Aloe on the banks of the Swartkops River
Winter is aloe time and when it comes to flowers one of my favorite seasons. I found these Kranz Aloe flowering on the banks of the Swartkops River in Redhouse.
Aloe Reserve view
One of my favourite natural things about winter is the fact that it's when the aloes bloom. And if you can add to it a beautiful view, like this one of the Swartkops River and the ocean from the Aloe Reserve in Bluewater Bay, then even better. Today is also Tata Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday. Happy birthday … Continue reading Aloe Reserve view
Prickly Pear Flower
The prickly pear season is usually around January to March but I was surprised to find a prickly pear plant with a flower in the Baakens Valley the other day. Taking a close up photo I realised how my photography has stagnated lately. Why stagnated? Well, for one I can't remember when last I've taken … Continue reading Prickly Pear Flower
The aloes are bloomng
It's that time of the year when the aloes are in full bloom and they can be seen both around the city as well as in the surrounding countryside. It doesn't matter if you're driving west, north or east (not south cause then you'll drive into the sea), the countryside is awash with the mostly reds and … Continue reading The aloes are bloomng
Celebrating 2000 posts
Today sees the 2000th post of Port Elizabeth Daily Photo. PEDP first saw the light on 9 November 2007 under the penmanship of Sue and Max Hoppe, collectively known on here as SAM. I discovered PEDP fairly early on and became a regular follower, trying to comment whenever I had a chance. Sue and Max inspired me … Continue reading Celebrating 2000 posts
King proteas at Humble Ways
Strolling around Humble Ways on Lovemore Heights I noticed this bush of King Proteas. The King Protea is South Africa's national flower and although the flowers on the bush are past their prime, they were still stunning. I kinda wish I had a bush like this in my garden.
Spider lily
A couple of years ago I posted on The Firefly Photo Files about the Spider Lilies I have in a pot at home (here and here). I was very surprised to find a lot of Spider Lilies in flower next to the big fish pond in St Georges Park when I walked through there the other … Continue reading Spider lily
Orchards and Kannas
Driving along the wine farms between Robertson and Bonnievale recently there were a lot of orchards with Kanna flowers growing between it and the road. I know in some areas they plant roses next to the orchards to warn the farmer of deceases but I'm not sure if the Kannas are for the same purpose … Continue reading Orchards and Kannas
