Most of us take driving on tar roads in the city for granted while there are many roads through informal settlements that are nothing more than a muddy dirt track. This one is in New Brighton right around the corner from the Red Location Museum.

Old Road signs
I don't know why but for some reason this road sign is my favorite road sign in the world. It stands just north of the Zuurberg Pass on the old road inland. From this point you can head north towards Somerset East on the R335, west towards Jansenville on the R400 or east to get to … Continue reading Old Road signs
The old road north
In years gone by (and now I'm not just talking about a few moons ago, but more like a 100 years ago) the main road from Port Elizabeth heading north (today called the R335) crossed over the mountains via the old Zuurberg Pass before heading further north through Somerset East and Cradock. This picture was taken of the … Continue reading The old road north
Ann’s Villa
Although cars cross over the Zuurberg mountains from Port Elizabeth into the Karoo via the Olifantskop Pass within minutes these days, the journey was a much longer, slower and bumpier one if you go back 150 years or so. Back in those days travellers had to make use of the Zuurberg Pass which snakes it's … Continue reading Ann’s Villa
Game Reserve tracks
Over the last two years or so the veld in the Eastern Cape has been very bare and brown due to a long drought, but after some very good rain during the winter the drought seems to be broken in most areas and the vegetation has returned with a vengeance. Visiting Bucklands Game Reserve during … Continue reading Game Reserve tracks
Road kill
"Don't try this at home". Not being road kill, but crawling around on a national road taking photos of road kill. Because if you're not careful you may end up like that as well. This hare clearly didn't have a lucky rabbit's foot. As it was the end of this poor hare this is also … Continue reading Road kill
Roadtrip
On Thursday morning I'm heading to East London for the start of the Mini vs Maxi Adventure across the Eastern Cape which takes the form of a four day road trip around the province. Usually when we go on holiday as a family we also do it road trip style as we are campers and … Continue reading Roadtrip
Raindrops on my windscreen
We had some good rains lately although a lot more is needed, specially in the catchment areas. I was sitting in traffic on the way home the other day, enjoying the rain, when I decided to take an impromptu photo of the rain through the windscreen of the car. At one of the traffic lights I … Continue reading Raindrops on my windscreen
Campanile view north
Looking north out from the Campanile observation area the view is basically taken up by the city centre and Settlers Freeway. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is visible on the right in the background while you can just see the big South African flag on the Donkin Reserve on the left.
Campanile view south
The viewing area of the Campanile has a window on each wall of the room giving you a view all around it. Looking south the Port Elizabeth Harbour and Settlers Freeway is in the foreground with the beachfront in the back. The big warehouse in the middle of the photo is a cold storage facility.
