Port Elizabeth has a stunningly beautiful coastline starting with the huge sand dunes at Colchester, white sandy and safe swimming beaches on the main beachfront, a rocky shoreline along the Wildside through to the "long walk on the beach" beaches at Sardinia Bay and Maitland. There are two guided hikes on during Tourism Month where the … Continue reading Walking the coast on the Sacramento

Sacramento Trail at Sardinia Bay
The Sacramento Trail along the coast between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay isn't just the most popular trail in the city but probably also one of the most scenic. A couple of us decided to do the 7km long trail the other day with only myself having done it (long ago) previously. We decided to take the … Continue reading Sacramento Trail at Sardinia Bay
Schoenies fresh water stream
The area around Schoenmakerskop and the Sacramento Trail has a number of fresh water springs seeping out the surrounding countryside and flowing down towards the sea. With all the rain we've had these past couple of months some of the little streams are flowing nice and strong. This specific one can be found close to … Continue reading Schoenies fresh water stream
Fishing in rough seas
A couple of fishermen fishing off the rocks at Schoenmakerskop with a bit of a rough sea beyond.
Steps to Nuns’ Pool
The steps across the road from the Sacramento Restaurant in Schoenmakerskop leading down to the gully known as Nun's Pool
Sacramento cannon head on
The brass cannon of the Portuguese galleon Sacramento, which sank close by in 1647, standing at the end of the road in Schoenmakerskop is a well known Port Elizabeth landmark and often gets photographed by both visitors and locals alike. I've taken pictures of it from the side looking both east and west, but this was … Continue reading Sacramento cannon head on
Couple on the beach
This little stretch of beach is on the Sacramento Trail about 1,5 to 2 kilometers from Schoenmakerskop. We didn't do the whole trail on our visit, but I did find the couple standing on the lonely little beach quite intriguing.
Fresh water spring
When walking along the coast line at Schoenmakerskop you see a number of fresh water streams, emanating from springs between the rocks and vegetated dunes, flowing down towards the sea. This particular one flows right below the Sacramento wreck monument about one kilometers from along the trail from the cannon.
Otter poo
Although I haven't had the opportunity to spot them, there are otters that live along the coastline around Schoenmakerskop. Walking along the first section of the Sacramento Trail the other day, we came across what looked like dry otter excrement. In other words, poo. Well, I think it was, judging from the amount of crab shell in … Continue reading Otter poo
Shipwreck?
Below the monument marking the site where the Sacramento wrecked in 1647 I found what looks like the remains of a row boat or something. I have no idea what it is, but it was ironic that it was lying on the rocks close to the Sacramento's wreck site.
