The Cenotaph in front of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Gallery was sculptured in 1929 by James Gardener to commemorate those from Port Elizabeth who died in the first World War between 1914 and 1918. It features St George buckling his sword after slaying the dragon, as well as the figure of a mother and her children. Hi, my Grand father was James Gardner. He was the sculptor. The models for the woman and children were my Grandmother, Doris Gardner, her son ( my Dad) Frank Gardner and her daughter ( my Aunt bubbles).Awsome work.Andy Gardner – Durban RSA
