Campanile

The Campanile was built and completed in 1923 in commemoration of the centenary of the arrival of the British Settlers in 1820. The site on which it stands used to be the landing beach where the settlers were offloaded before their long journey to the Grahamstown district. The tower is 51.8 meters high and has 204 steps to the top. It also has a carillon of 23 bells.

  1. Yes, that looks like a long way to the top. But, after seeing the views in your subsequent posts, the effort was worth it. I can commiserate with you, though, since I climbed to the top of the church on Monmarte in Paris. I was impressed by how worn the old stone steps were, and felt sorry for the priests that climbed those steps daily to ring the bells.

  2. Funny how I drove past this evening on my way to the sea and I pondered stopping to take a few pictures. The Campanile looked rather dull at 7.30pm – it could do with some decent lighting seeing it is an historical landmark

  4. Hi Firefly;) I noticed your exclamation on Gaelyn's post and smiled to myself. You just HAD to be a South African I followed you here and now I'd like to know if this Campanile is of the church in PE. Excellent photo too.
