Gamtoos Dairy Farm

There are big dairy farming areas to both the east and the west of Port Elizabeth producing milk not just for the Port Elizabeth area, but also beyond. Some of these farms are massive, producing thousands of litres of milk every day. Most of the cows on these farms are Jersey and Friesian cows. The ones on this farm in the Gamtoos Valley west of Port Elizabeth are Jersey cows.

  1. My grandparents emigrated from Lithuania and settled in the Gamtoos Valley around 1900-06, farmed on “Aschoek” later known as “Oshoek”. My father and his sisters used to go to school in Hankey on horseback. The valley is outstandingly beautiful. the view from Saartjie Baartman's ( Hottentot Venus) grave over the valley is one of the best in the valley. The river flooded cyclically every 10 years or so and in the 1970s the farmhouse was lost in the floods.

  2. Every time I drive past this farm on the way to Plett I think it must be some of the loveliest farmland in the country. Lovely, restful image. All the best for 2010!
