Windpomp

One of the iconic rural countryside objects of South Africa is the windpomp (wind pump).  Windpompe is used to extract water from boreholes and can be found (working or not) on all our highways and byways around South Africa’s countryside.  This one I photographed on one of the game reserves just outside Port Elizabeth.

  1. Windmills like that are almost a thing of the past here in the States. They are very practicle and photogenic. Now they are showing up again in a more modern version to make power instead of drawing water.Sure looks like you had a great time in the Karoo Jonker.

  2. We saw some of those when we were there, and I was so surprised. Guess I thought they were mostly in the western U.S. so it seemed odd to me to see them in South Africa! Beautiful photo.
