In the days of old South End before most of it was demolished and the people forcibly removed from the area, Walmer Road was the main road running through South End towards the suburb of Walmer. In those days the main hotels and businesses of the area was found along this road. Today only a small section of this old road is still visible at the top of Pier Street. It leads through an open piece of land and is slowly being overgrown by the grass and other vegetation.

Looks about as sad and derelict as parts of District Six in Cape Town.

There is also a part of Forest Hill Drive left. It met up with Walmer Road directly before it was rerouted during reconstruction of South End and junctions with Mitchell Street. Like Southdene and Stuart Township, these remind of lost and sometimes ancient civilisations.

Please tell me more. My work used to take me to PE, and my boss' favourite accommodation was a place, maybe hotel, in Walmer, just off from the main road in the 1990's.Does all this no longer exist?

My grandfather's old combi used to struggle up that hill. I remember it well. Every time I go onto Google maps, I find myself looking for that road. I appreciate the photo. Many memories there. Thanks!

Did any one else notice the lack of potholes? Those were the days when roads were built well!
