Probably the best known and most photographed feature of the Drakensberg is the magnificent Amphitheatre. Unfortunately due to all the rain in the area when we were there the Amphitheatre was only visible in its full glory on two out of the ten days of our visit.
The Amphitheatre is a 5 kilometer wide 1220 meter high rock wall towering above the Royal Natal National Park below. The highest point on top of the Amphitheatre is Mont-aux-Sources which stands 3282 meters above sea level. Both the mighty Orange River and the great Thukela (Tugela) River has their source on top of it while the Tugela Waterfall which cascades 948 meters down the rock face over five free-leaping falls is the second highest waterfall in the world.

P and I have been to the top of the Amphitheatre. We climbed up the chain ladder. It is an awsome experience! P wants his ashes scattered there when he dies – best he leave enough money for a helicopter to take me up! Not going up that chain ladder with a zimmer frame! LOL!

Awesome – in every sense of the word! Thank you for these fantastic photos. I guess cos of all the rain you never got to do the walk called The Gorge? Day walk that takes you into into the Tugela Gorge. We did it every year we holidayed in that part of the world and it was always a highlight. I must go do it again one of these years.
