Township butcher

Most people would probably cringe when they see today’s photo, but I found this scene very interesting.  Across the way from the Red Location Museum in New Brighton I discovered this township butcher working from a wooden shack on the corner of the road.  There was a cow head lying to the side of the “butchery” which tells me that what you see in the picture was part of a cow that was slaughtered earlier and delivered to her.  As I arrived one of the locals was buying some of the liver and fat which was then wrapped in newspaper after being paid for.  There wasn’t time to ask her about the prices and how she measures what she sells, but I will spend a bit longer there next time I visit the township.

  1. This is a typical scene in many countries. When I first encountered it in India, I was shocked and “put off” but when vacationing in Mexico I always bought in the mercados without fear!

  2. I find this and the township cooking interesting post. I have heard that this is generally safer that bying meat/ food from establishments that comply with the health laws, because what you buy is so fresh and the bacteria has not had time to take hold.
