Looking down from the flyover at the Russell road interchange. Port Elizabeth is a strange mixture of big City with a small town feel. It has areas that are historic, next to modern high rise buildings. Donkey carts share the roads with the latest hi-tech cars. This freeway system runs parallel to narrow little one way streets which were laid out in the early 1800s.

I frankly like that kind of mix up of old and new. Too soon we forget what we had in the past as we’re so caught up in where we think we want to go. Sure do wish we had that much open pavement in the Seattle area.

There’s a freeway system in Atlanta known as Spaghetti Junction as well! I stay away from there as much as possible!

The fisrt place in the world to be nickmaned Spaghetti Junction is in the UK, the city of Birmingham. I’m originally from that way, and when I saw your photo I did a double take. It’s quite a striking image.

We have one of these in Knoxville too, but it’s called Malfunction Junction, and the area underneath it is called the Spaghetti Bowl. It’s funny how these roads look so similar even though they are half a world away.

Sadly though, these freeways built (inexplicably) on the coastline have cut off the city centre from the sea and marooned landmarks like the campanile in no-man’s-land.
