A couple of years back during a Doors Open event, I paid a visit to the Algerian embassy, and chatted with a staff member. He said in Algeria, some people had taken to skiing on dunes after having had spent time in France in the winter. The consistency of sand and snow isn't that far apart, so I can see this working.
